「色」を使った英語表現

色を使った様々な慣用表現

日本語にも「顔が青ざめる」「真っ赤な嘘」など色を使った表現が見られますが、英語でも色を使った表現が沢山あります。ここではそれらをまとめてみます。

"Black and white" - 白黒つける、はっきりさせる

  1. The rules of the game are clear-cut and black and white; there's no room for interpretation. （ゲームのルールははっきりしており、解釈の余地はありません。）
  2. In this company, performance evaluations are black and white, based solely on results and numbers. （この会社では、業績評価は結果と数値に基づいており、主観的な要素は考慮されません。）
  3. The moral dilemma presented in the story is not black and white; it raises complex ethical questions. （物語で提示される道徳的なジレンマは単純明快ではなく、複雑な倫理的問題を提起します。）
  4. Life is not always black and white; there are many shades of gray in between. （人生は常に単純明快ではなく、その間に多くの曖昧な部分が存在します。）

"In the red" - 赤字である

  1. The company has been struggling financially, and they've been in the red for the past two quarters. （その会社は財政的に苦境に立たされており、過去2四半期間赤字続きです。）
  2. After the unexpected medical expenses, our family's budget is now in the red. （予期せぬ医療費の支出の後、私たちの家計は現在赤字です。）

"Green with envy" - 羨ましい、嫉妬している

"Caught red-handed" - ぱっと捕まる、現行犯で捕まる

"Yellow-bellied" - 臆病な、臆病者

"Purple prose" - 言葉遣いが華美でわかりにくい文章
