TellとSpeakの使い分け

なんとなく、どちらも「話す」という意味で覚えている人が多いのではないでしょうか？そんな二つの動詞の使い分けに焦点を当ててみました。

Tell

tellは「人に何かを伝える」のが根本的なイメージ。日常会話では、そこを押さえておけば大丈夫です。また応用編として「分かる、知る、見分ける」などの意味でも使えます。

ポイント

伝える系の用法では、

SVOO（第4文型）

SVO about ～（第3文型）

を取ることが多いです。

tell 人 to do～「人に～するように言う」

も頻繁に使われる表現です。

例文

1. She told me a funny joke. （彼女は私に面白いジョークを教えてくれた。）
2. Can you tell the time on that clock? （その時計で時間を教えてもらえますか？）
3. He told his family about his promotion. （彼は昇進のことを家族に伝えた。）
4. I can tell that you're upset. （君が不機嫌だとわかるよ。）
5. The teacher told the students to be quiet. （先生は生徒たちに静かにするように言った。）
6. She told her friend a secret. （彼女は友達に秘密を教えた。）
7. The news anchor tells us the latest updates. （ニュースアンカーは最新情報を伝えてくれる。）
8. He told his dog to sit. （彼は犬に座るように言った。）
9. Can you tell me the way to the nearest gas station? （最寄りのガソリンスタンドへの道を教えてもらえますか？）
10. Please tell your brother to call me. （お願い、あなたの兄弟に私に電話するように伝えてください。）

Speak

speakは「発話」そのものに焦点があたった動詞です。「もっとゆっくり話してもらえますか」と相手に頼むときに、Could you speak more slowly?というのはそのためです。

ポイント

人と話す場合、何かの話題について話す場合は以下のパターンを取ることが多いです。

speak to/with～　「誰々と話す」

speak on/about～　「～について話す」

例文

1. She can speak three languages fluently. （彼女は３つの言語を流暢に話すことができる。）
2. Please speak louder; I can't hear you. （もっと大きな声で話してください。聞こえません。）
3. He spoke to the audience about his travels. （彼は聴衆に自分の旅行について話した。）
4. I want to speak with the manager regarding my complaint. （クレームについてマネージャーと話したいのです。）
5. Can you speak softly? The baby is sleeping. （静かに話してもらえますか？赤ちゃんが寝ています。）
6. She doesn't speak much in class, but she's a good listener. （授業であまり話さないけど、彼女は良い聞き手だ。）
7. We need to speak with our lawyer before making any decisions. （どんな決定もする前に弁護士と相談する必要がある。）
8. He can speak on a variety of topics with great knowledge. （彼は多くのトピックについて詳しい知識を持って話すことができる。）
9. The teacher asked the students to speak about their favorite books. （先生は生徒たちにお気に入りの本について話すように頼んだ。）
10. They often speak on the phone for hours. （彼らはよく何時間も電話で話す。）
